YouTube is celebrating Black History Month for the whole of February.
To mark the occasion, the YouTube logo will be reimagined for Black History Month by various Black artists. The updates will appear in the top-left corner of the Home feed on mobile devices and its website.
The platform has first commissioned Brazilian-based artist and art director Leandro Assis to kick off the celebration, and he has created a stylized “BLM” design in place of the usual red play button.
Assis also worked on a banner for YouTube’s ‘Celebrating Black History Month’ page, which features striking illustrations on a black background.
Speaking about his lettermark, Assis said, “What inspired me to create this piece were the Black people around me. The meaning and the importance of our hair, the way we dance, the rhythms we create, and the beauty of our different skin tones.”
YouTube added that it has a “host of exciting activities planned” for Black History Month. It will begin with a new showcase of artwork from Black guest artists “along with curated content from Black Creators and talent across our Spotlight and TV surfaces—including new YouTube Originals and Kids content.”
