On Chinese New Year, friends and families gift each other red envelopes filled with money as a symbol of good luck. Extending the tradition, Burberry has commissioned artists to design the auspicious packets in their own vivid illustration styles.
Committing to this year’s theme, “Spring in Your Heart,” Chinese creatives incorporated spring blossoms and greenery into their art.
New York-based illustrator Feifei Ruan, for example, drew upon “melting snow and rain” to create an intricate piece abundant with flora and fauna.
Artist Jiayi Sun dreamed up a rabbit, wearing a horned hat to honor the Year of the Ox, in a whimsical forest with colorful plants.
One artist, Oamul Lu, painted a warm-hued picture of a woman walking along spring blossom trees with Burberry-branded lanterns hanging from them.
Despite their name, red envelopes don’t necessarily have to be red, at least in modern times. The packets were traditionally exchanged in a bid to ward off red-fearing evil spirits, but have since evolved to become a customary token of goodwill.
