The phrase, “glass ceiling,” refers to the invisible barrier imposed upon people—especially women and minorities—that prevents them from achieving success. And Kamala Harris, the first woman, African-American, and Asian-American to become Vice President of the United States, is a prime example of someone who has smashed the proverbial glass ceiling.
Commemorating the astounding moment in history of a glass ceiling being shattered multifold, a broken glass portrait entitled Vice President Kamala Harris Glass Ceiling Breaker has been installed at the iconic Lincoln Memorial in Washington by the National Women’s History Museum and female career empowerment group Chief.
The symbolic artwork—created by glass medium artist Simon Berger, creative agency BBH New York, and production partner M ss ng P eces—will be up on display until 6 February.
It is accompanied by a plaque with a QR code, which triggers an Instagram AR filter illustrating Harris’ glass-breaking achievements when scanned.
“Today’s progress is built on the legacy of the women who came before – the trailblazers, like Kamala, who raised their voices, marched for their rights, and ran for elected office; the women who cracked glass ceilings so that other women could shatter them,” described Holly Hotchner, President and CEO of the National Women’s History Museum, in a press release.
“This artwork not only celebrates Vice President Kamala Harris, a woman who embodies this mission, but it recognizes the women who came before her and those who’ll come after,” shared Lindsay Kaplan, co-founder of Chief. “Today, only 23 percent of executive roles are held by women. We hope this exhibit will show women of all backgrounds that they can change that percentage, assert their voices, and open doors as they shatter barriers.”
