In an alternative reality, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have had a peek of Vision’s, erm, Power Stone.
This was because, to showcase the birth of Paul Bettany’s Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, director Joss Whedon thought it was apt to reveal the Avenger’s genitals, given that the character was naked.
Bettany detailed the development of the character, as well as his life at Marvel before Vision, in a recent segment of Conan. It was Jon Favreau who wanted him to be J.A.R.V.I.S, Tony Stark’s smart assistant, who Bettany described to be “this disembodied voice of a sort of, you know, a personality-less… computer voice” with “no character at all.”
He was later cast as Vision. However, Whedon was adamant about displaying the Synthezoid’s sensitive bits, to the chagrin of other producers.
Nevertheless, artists were briefed to create renderings of Vision’s birth “with a penis,” the actor recounted. When Whedon was called in to look at a whole wall of Vision births, Bettany recalled the director concluding, “Never have I been more sure that I don’t need to see Vision with a penis.”
It’s a good thing, because going through nine episodes of WandaVision with Vision’s hardware ingrained in your mind won’t be good for your sanity.
