DC’s ‘Leaked’ Note Preventing Sales Of Inspired Art As NFTs Gets Listed As NFT

With crypto art climbing in popularity, the lines between inspiration and infringement have gotten even more blurry. While it can be argued that whoever takes over a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) would own the art—similar to buying a real Vincent van Gogh painting and removing it from the hands of a museum—what if that piece were heavily inspired by an original work?
Noting how lucrative the NFT market has grown, DC says it is exploring the idea of expanding into the digital art sphere in a way that would be fair for “all parties involved, including fans and collectors.” While that happens, the company is asking artists and writers not to submit digital work “featuring DC’s intellectual property with or without NFTs.”
As reported by io9, freelancers have been receiving letters by Jay Kogan, DC Comics’ Senior Vice President of Legal Matters, urging them to put the distribution or sale of DC-themed digital art on hold, and that some of these notes have “leaked” online. Boing Boing notes that one of these copies has now been listed on NFT marketplaces OpenSea andZora.
In its alleged note, DC shared that it is not only considering distributing original digital art through this channel, but also “new art created specifically for the NFT market.”
“We’ll share further information as it becomes available, and we appreciate your cooperation and partnership,” the company concluded.
The artwork, titled A Marvel To Behold, is described to be displayed on a medium of “ink on paper, cellophane tape.” One of the listings currently stands at a bid price of the Etherium equivalent to US$941.73.
