Florence’s Palazzo Strozzi Gets ‘Cut’ By 3D Illusion To Expose Its Insides

While museums around the world have gone digital in response to COVID-19 closures, French street artist and photographer JR has headed straight to the source. His latest work, La Ferita (The Wound), adorns and eats into the primary façade of Florence’s Palazzo Strozzi as a commentary of culture’s accessibility during this time of crisis.
The riveting 3D mural, measuring at 28 meters (92 feet) in height and 33 meters (108 feet) in width, imagines the cultural institution being cut open with a “wound” to display what’s inside. The illusion seemingly exposes the museum’s exhibits, a courtyard colonnade, and a library. The artwork, which was completed by a crew of 11 people over two months, reveals different parts of the building depending on where the visitor is standing.
According to Palazzo Strozzi, the mural represents “a symbolic yet painful wound suffered by all cultural institutions both in Italy and abroad” as establishments are forced to shutter to comply with social distancing guidelines. It also serves as “an act of voyeurism… to reveal that which cannot be seen: the depiction of a reality that goes beyond what one can customarily behold.”
The Wound will remain on the façade of Palazzo Strozzi through August 22, 2021.
