Xbox Unveils Sustainable Wireless Controllers Made From Recycled Water Jugs, CDs

Gamers, the next move to sustainability is literally in your hands. From April, Xbox will begin rolling out two eye-catching wireless controllers built with recycled resins. The devices represent some of its first steps towards a greener cause without sacrificing quality.
The controllers comprise a portion of resins produced from recycled materials like “automotive headlight covers, plastic water jugs, and CDs,” Microsoft reveals. They’ll be the first Xbox hardware items to be made with post-consumer recycled resins.

The company stresses that the use of recycled resins will not make the wireless controllers any shoddier. “We expect no compromises from these recycled materials… our testing shows the materials provide the same controller durability or performance you have come to expect,” the company notes.

The first of the two, an Electric Volt colorway, draws upon the “high-energy” ethos found in athletic wear and sneaker design. Its high-vis yellow upper contrasts against the matte black hybrid D-pad, and its white base brings “more dimension” to the whole look. This variation, priced at US$65, will be available from April 27, 2021 in several markets around the world.

The other design, the special-edition Daystrike Camo, is the first Xbox controller to be decked with textured grips all over the bumpers. It embodies a camo “streetwear vibe” with a bold palette of red, gray, and black.
Microsoft shares that the wireless controllers are part of its “commitment to waste reduction and recycling.”
With designs as striking as these, you’d never be able to tell that the controllers were water jugs and headlight covers in a previous life.
