Dolce & Gabbana mixed models with robots for the display of its Fall/Winter 2021 collection.
The company partnered with Istituto Italiano di Technologia (IIT) to plant robots among its row of human talents to wear its latest pieces, inspired by 90s supermodels.
Despite the fashion show being audience-less due to the pandemic, Dolce & Gabbana kept spirits up by putting the robots as a centered art piece, controlled behind-the-scenes, while models sashayed down the runway in the brand’s garments.
The brand employed iCub and R1 multifunctional humanoids, a result of IIT’s specialized research in robotics and artificial intelligence.
“In collaboration with @istititoitalianoditecnologia, the #DGFW21 Collection reveals how technology and craftmanship, two apparently different worlds, come together in a celebration of Fatto a Mano,” the brand caption the fashion show posted on its Instagram.
During the virtual fashion show, the models were dressed in bright colors, leopard prints, and glittering gold and silver coats and blouses.
Dolce & Gabanna’s extensive collection included jackets with big shoulders, a nod to the 1990s. Among the 135 looks include faux fur and mini-dresses resembling space outfits and see-through plastic overcoats.
With the world going digital, it makes sense for Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to lean into the artificial.
