When Cartoon Network made its debut in Japan in 1997, its beloved icons fumbled to adapt to their new, busy life in the country. At least, that’s according to promo advertisements for the network, created by a Japanese studio.
In one spot, George Jetson enjoys his solidarity at a ramen shop until an anime appears on television. He winces and switches to another channel—Cartoon Network, of course—showing The Flintstones.
Another short imagines Tom and Jerry at a 24-hour konbini or convenience store. Tom now works there as a cashier, and his duties are disrupted by his rodent frenemy, who is seen helping himself to snacks and a hot stew called oden on the sly. The sheer audacity of Jerry for eating without paying.
Another scene envisions Droopy Dog attempting to cross a congested street. He presses the walk signal button, to no response, before drawing out a secret button that launches anvils on the vehicles.
