Domino’s New Mode Of Pizza Delivery Are Autonomous Self-Driving Robot Cars

Domino’s Pizza will be delivering pizzas via Nuro driverless cars in Houston starting this week as a pilot program.
The company states that “selected customers” in Houston who make a prepaid delivery order from its store in the Woodland Heights neighborhood during certain dates and times can have their pizza delivered by the Nuro R2 robot.
Customers will first place their orders and make payment to the Woodland Heights branch online, and then opt to have their orders brought in by the R2. They’ll then receive a unique PIN via text alert, along with updates on the vehicle’s location.
When the robot car arrives, the customer enters the PIN on the robot’s touch screen. This will prompt its doors to open and enable it to deliver the pizza.
Nuro’s R2 was the first driverless vehicle to receive regulatory approval from the US Department of Transportation, giving it special exemption from federal safety requirements.
“This program will allow us to better understand how customers respond to the deliveries, how they interact with the robot, and how it affects store operations,” Domino’s chief innovation officer, Dennis Maloney, said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing how autonomous delivery can work along with Domino’s existing delivery experts to better support the customers’ needs.”
