Watch: Pixar Teaches You How To Create A Classic Animation Flipbook

In an instructional video by Pixar, animator Cody Lyon trades the usual digital techniques to go back to basics, demonstrating how to create a flipbook.
To work alongside the 15-minute tutorial, all you will need are a stack of papers, a pencil, and an eraser. For those who are wondering what a flipbook is, it is a book of drawings conveying a series of pictures in progressing forms of movement so that when the pages are flipped in rapid succession, they animate a scene or create the illusion of movement.
Using the character 22 of Soul as the subject, Lyon invites viewers to sketch out the figure on the first sheet of paper, before sketching in rough lines to draw out 22 on the next page. Lyon also teaches viewers the techniques of paper flipping, ensuring that the drawing flows in the flipbook.
At the end of the video, the result shows 22 jumping gleefully as he flipped the pages. Watch it below.
