David From ‘David After Dentist’ Sells NFT Version Of Viral Meme For $11,000

It seems like the world has entered a time machine and went back to the dawn of the viral internet, because memes of yore—such as ‘Nyan Cat’ and ‘Disaster Girl’—have been revived in the crypto art era. Now, ‘David After Dentist’, one of the first things to break the internet, has made a comeback in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT).
13 years ago, seven-year-old David Devore Jr. had just returned from dental surgery and was feeling delirious from the anesthesia. His father thought to record the whole incident, which culminated with the boy asking, “Is this real life?”
The unforgettable YouTube video has since racked up over 140 million views, but its perpetual fame isn’t the end of it. Having observed how other internet-famous characters have landed in a new cycle of success with the NFT market, Devore, who is now a 20-year-old student from the University of Florida, and his family members went ahead and minted the clip as an NFT on creative economy platform Foundation.
The one-of-a-kind NFT, an unedited 640 x 480-pixel MP4, ended up being sold for 3.30 ETH (about US$11,600) last Friday, a day after being put up on the marketplace.
According to Insider, the artwork is the first of several viral videos to join an NFT creator program started by video licensing firm Jukin Media.
David Devore Sr. intends to use the revenue to finalize payments for the college education of his two sons. The rest of it will possibly be reserved for his retirement with his wife, he told Insider. “Boring stuff, but it is fun entertaining the possibility of taking some of those financial pressures off,” he added.
The father also expressed his awe at the predominant NFT scene. “It’s really cool that we’re able to turn David’s video into a piece of art,” he noted, declaring that it felt “like 2009 all over again.”
