Earlier this month, Jeff Bezos had announced that his space venture, Blue Origin, will be offering one seat on the inaugural flight of its suborbital rocket, New Shepard.
And instead of a fixed-price ticket, the public were welcome to place their bids on the auction site.
Two days ago, on May 19, the bids were ‘unsealed’ and made public, and as of today, the highest bid has hit a whopping US$2.8 million.
According to Robb Report, the initial bid was US$1.4 million, but climbed to nearly US$3 million within 24 hours. It’s been revealed that Blue Origin received over 5,200 bids, from 136 countries worldwide.
The eventual price of the ticket is expected to go up even further during the public auction on June 12, which will conclude the ticket sale.
Proceeds from the sale will go to Blue Origin’s ‘Club for the Future’, a foundation to teach children about space exploration.
For more information, or to place your own bid, head to the auction site here.
