Recently, a user on gaming platform Roblox spent 350,000 Robux (approximately US$4,115) on a Gucci Dionysus bag—though it cannot be carried about in the real world. And no, this virtual version isn’t an NFT nor a piece of digital art either.
According to Paper Magazine, the purse starts from US$3,400 in real life, meaning the virtual bag had cost more than the real thing, although it had no use outside of the gaming platform.
The virtual Dionysus bag was released as part of Gucci’s two-week virtual event with Roblox, titled the ‘Gucci Garden Experience’. However, since the sale, the price of the bag has dropped significantly to less than US$800 in-game.
Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and husband to tennis superstar Serena Williams, commented on the sale, tweeting, “Remember: this Roblox purse is not an NFT and thus has no value/use/transferability outside the Roblox world – yet it’s worth more than the physical one. Watch this space.”
With NFTs taking off and fetching incredible prices, could in-game items be the next frontier of luxury virtual goods?
A Gucci bag in Roblox resold for 350,000 Robux or roughly $4,115. The same purse IRL costs $3,400.
