United Airlines Teases Images Of Its New Supersonic Jets For Commercial Flights

Your trip on United Airlines aircraft could go from fast to ultrafast in the future, as the firm has become the first US airline to add supersonic jets to its fleet.
This week, the airline announced its purchase of 15 supersonic jets from manufacturer Boom Supersonic, including the option to buy 35 more planes in the future.
The new aircraft is expected to cut travel times in half, and will operate on 100% sustainable aviation fuel.
However, don’t expect changes anytime soon. As per CNBC, Boom’s first commercial jet, the Overture, hasn’t been built yet. It’s slated to launch in 2025, before taking to the skies in 2026 and eventually carrying passengers in 2029.
“Our mission has always been about connecting people and now working with Boom, we’ll be able to do that on an even greater scale,” said United CEO Scott Kirby.
Reaching speeds of Mach 1.7 – twice of today’s fastest aircraft – the new jets are expected to go from Newark to London in just three and a half hours, Newark to Frankfurt in four hours, and San Francisco to Tokyo in just six hours.
The planes will also consist of new features such as in-seat entertainment screens and contactless technology.
In terms of the environment, the new jets are expected to be net-zero carbon from day one, and will run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel, a first for the industry.
“The world’s first purchase agreement for net-zero carbon supersonic aircraft marks a significant step toward our mission to create a more accessible world,” said Blake Scholl, Founder and CEO of Boom Supersonic.
