The outside world can be messy, but step inside the forthcoming Ghibli Theme Park and you’ll be whisked away by the sight of a Catbus and a
steampunk castle.
The earliest you can visit the anticipated attraction park is in the fall of 2022, but fret not. To ease the wait, Aichi Prefecture—where Ghibli Theme Park will be located—has presented new updates about this massive undertaking.
The theme park will be divided into five sections: Ghibli’s Giant Warehouse; Hill of Youth; Mononoke Village; Dondoko Forest; and Witch’s Valley. The first three are expected to be ready by 2022, while the others are projected for completion the following year.
In their latest press release, Studio Ghibli and Aichi Prefecture shared concept drawings for a new playroom in Ghibli’s Giant Warehouse that’s inspired by
My Neighbor Totoro. Young fans would surely take delight in the miniature replicas of the beloved Catbus, local shrines, a camphor tree, and Mei and Satsuki’s house. For those hankering for a little more, the Dondoko Forest opening in 2023 will be enveloped in the
My Neighbor Totoro theme.
In addition, the theme park will feature a 20.7-foot-long reproduction of a
Laputa: Castle in the Sky airship, a rotary plaza resembling the one in
Whisper of the Heart, the cat’s office from
The Cat Returns, interactive iron forge bellows like those in
Princess Mononoke, and Kiki’s childhood and witch’s homes from
Kiki’s Delivery Service.
Behold, Studio Ghibli’s vision for the Ghibli Theme Park:
