This year’s most liveable city rankings by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) saw a shakeup due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Asian-Pacific cities dominated most of the top 10 list, with Auckland snagging the top spot of the world’s most liveable city.
New Zealand’s stellar ranking was boosted by the country’s successful handling of the pandemic, which saw schools, cinemas, restaurants, and other cultural attractions remaining open during the survey period of February 22 to March 21 this year.
Following Auckland’s lead are Osaka, Adelaide, Wellington, Tokyo, Perth, Zurich, Geneva, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
According to CNBC, cities are ranked based on over 30 criteria, including broad categories of stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
The COVID-19 pandemic added more emphasis on the health care sector, as well as how well each city dealt with restrictions around local events, cinemas, concerts, and dining.
Cities that were in lockdown during the survey period saw their scores significantly reduced based on these criteria, causing many European cities to fall down the list.
