Each summer without fail, Bill Gates presents his top reading picks to help broaden perspectives through difficult times. Last year, in the height of the pandemic, for instance, the Microsoft cofounder shared book recommendations that could help the world cope with its emotions and illness-related fears.

In the midst of tumultuous times himself—involving the end of his 27-year marriage with Melinda Gates and resurfaced tension about his possible ties with late socialite and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein—Gates explores “the complicated relationship between humanity and nature” within the pages of five books.
Gates explains that the insightful texts deal with how people might react when they “come into conflict with the world around them,” and what some of them have done to reverse the damage.
