Beeple, who previously sold an NFT artwork for US$69 million, has now launched a new blockchain platform, WeNew.
On WeNew, users will be able to collect historic moments as NFTs, starting with tennis star Andy Murray’s 2013 triumph at Wimbledon.
Despite the numerous NFT platforms sprouting up on the internet over the past year, WeNew has the backing some of the world’s biggest brands. This includes Time, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Endeavor, and Wasserman, with more yet to be announced.
According to VentureBeat, WeNew will curate and release NFTs of the most memorable moments in all facets of history: music, fashion, sports, and politics. The platform will become “the memory palace of the metaverse,” Beeple, whose real name is Mike Winkelmann, said.
NFTs allow people to “meaningfully engage with the memories and moments that matter to them – maybe even inspired them or shaped who they are in some way. WeNew exists to facilitate and make concrete these once-abstract connections,” he said.
Apart from the digital artwork, users who purchase a historic moment on WeNew will also receive a physical token – a looping video on a museum-quality screen that they can display at home.
Select sales, like the single-issue version of the Andy Murray NFT, will come with a one-of-a-lifetime experience. The highest bidder will get to play a round of tennis with Murray on court at Wimbledon, along with a VIP behind-the-scenes tour, two tickets to the Centre Court for the 2022 men’s finals, and signed souvenirs.
Users who don’t want to shell out big bucks can also purchase other NFTs available in larger editions of 20, 50, 100, and 500. These start at US$49, with the different price points featuring Murray’s trophy lift, victory interview, 2012 runner-up speech, and highlight reel from 2013.
In response to the uncertainty surrounding blockchain’s impact on the environment, WeNew is partnering with the Open Earth Foundation to establish best practices to minimize energy usage. A portion of each purchase will also be donated to the organization to help fight climate change.
WeNew is now open for sign-ups, with bidding on the Andy Murray NFTs starting July 2.
