Apple’s AirPods have become a ubiquitous accessory, but the tech giant might be looking to add some functionality to its ever-popular charging case that could be music to the ears of long-time fans and lovers of retro tech candy. A recently published patent, filed in September 2022, explores a potential wireless earbud case that features a built-in touchscreen display, mirroring the design of the classic iPod Nano.

The concept details a charging case with a rectangular display on the front, similar to that of an Apple Watch. With a touchscreen interface, it would transform the AirPods case into a modern take on the micro iPod.

The display wouldn’t just offer basic music controls like play, pause, and volume adjustments. According to the filing, it could even enable users to see battery life, switch between audio sources, and even interact with a limited selection of apps. The patent mentions the possibility of integrating functionalities like Maps, Weather, and even basic notifications.

Launched in 2005, Apple’s ultra-compact music player had a small color screen for displaying album art and photos, and later iterations even included video playback and a built-in camera. Alas, with the rise of smartphones offering similar music playback functionalities alongside a wider array of features, the demand for dedicated products like the iPod Nano dwindled. The company ultimately discontinued the model in 2017.

While patents don’t always translate into final products, they do provide a glimpse into what tech companies are considering for the future. This update, in particular, shows how Apple might be looking to expand the capabilities of its AirPods ecosystem.  The inclusion of a touchscreen display on the charging case could offer a more intuitive way to control music playback and access essential functions, potentially reducing reliance on a connected device.
