The Boring Company, started by Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, has just gained approval from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to build tunnels between downtown and the beach.
Dual tunnels, one in each direction, would span over the three-mile-long distance. They could be called the ‘Las Olas Loop’, after the city’s beach.
According toMashable, city council documents showed that The Boring Company proposed the idea of the beach tunnel on June 21, with it promising to be “transportation that prioritizes safety and emphasizes multimodal mobility and accessibility.”
As pera tweet by Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean J Trantalis, from July 7, other companies have 45 days to submit competing proposals that could be viable alternatives to Musk’s.
This won’t be the first Loop the company is building stateside. Earlier this year, the 1.7-mile-long Loop in Las Vegas opened, ferrying passengers through narrow passageways using Tesla vehicles.
As Mashable noted, while the company first promised that autonomous electric pods would transport passengers through the tunnels at high speed, the final launch featured a fleet of Tesla cars ferrying passengers at usual driving speeds instead.
Though a fleet of Teslas and autonomous pods differ quite greatly, it could still be an innovative way to reduce traffic congestion in major cities, allowing citizens the option of a “fast track” to their destinations.
Take a look at how The Boring Company’s Loop system works below.
