Earlier this week, Microsoft took to Twitter with a surprising proposition: “If this gets 20k likes, we’ll replace the paperclip emoji in Microsoft 365 with Clippy.”
With over 159,000 likes and counting, it seems the tech giant has made good on its promise. It's brought back Clippy, and loads more. In honor of World Emoji Day, Microsoft gave users a sneak peek at over 1,800 redesigned emojis, rolling out to Microsoft 365 in the coming months.
Along with the paperclip emoji, the rest of the collection is noticeably 3D, instead of the usual 2D emojis we’re used to. Design researcher Meghan Stockdale said the redesign focused on the concept of play, encouraging users to tap into their best work and most authentic selves.
“Play is vital for things like creative brainstorming, developing, and mastering new skills, and team building, but we haven’t typically been open to giving play a place at work or in our work tools,” explained Stockdale.
According to her research, Stockdale felt the new-and-improved emojis would add a sense of fun to otherwise mundane interactions in the office, helping workers express themselves better than just with the written word.
Microsoft also released a sketch of five new emojis that capture working life after the pandemic, from a multitasker to two emojis for “on mute” and “no video call.” There are more lighthearted ones, too – such as a lady with a business-appropriate top paired with lounge bottoms.
Some of the new emojis will be available in Flipgrid starting this week, with the rest being launching in the coming months. The full set will be available on Teams and Windows by the holiday season, with it further expanding to other Microsoft services in 2022.
