Sir Jony Ive, former Apple design chief and one of the most prominent designers of our time, has partnered with Prince Charles to launch a design lab through London’s Royal College of Art (RCA).
Named the Terra Carta Design Lab, the new venture aims to work with students to “create small designs that can make a big impact for the world’s transition to a sustainable future.”
According to Fast Company, the lab takes its cue from its name, the Terra Carta (meaning “Earth Charter” in Latin), a 17-page environmental charter designed by Ive.
The charter provides an environmental innovation framework that will be backed by US$10 billion in planned investments from the private sector, including organizations such as Amazon, Octopus Energy, and the Islamic Development Bank.
The Terra Carta Design Lab will be inviting RCA’s 2,300 students to innovate “high impact, lost cost solutions for Nature, People, and Planet.” Students will work on topics such as greenhouse gases, increasing biodiversity, and supporting environmentally-focused economic development in developing countries.
RCA students will develop and submit their ideas throughout the year, with the school announcing the top 16 finalists in November. An unspecified number of winning designs will then go on to receive funding in 2022, along with personal mentorship from Ive himself.
“I’m incredibly proud to be part of the Terra Carta Design Lab founded by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. It’s a visionary and imaginative way of helping address the world’s increasingly urgent environmental problems,” said Sir Jony Ive, Chancellor of the Royal College of Art.
