Contrary to what’s been sensationalized in news reports, the cardboard beds installed at the Olympic Village are not “anti-sex,” though the fact that athletes are discouraged from using condoms supplied by organizers doesn’t help their case.
But who better to take this matter to bed than the people who actually sleep on them? Team USA’s women’s rugby team has thus pushed the cardboard bedding to its limits by taking turns to perform CPR on it, striking yoga poses, jumping on it, and all around attempting to break it down.
“And for this last take, Nicole [Heavirland] and I will be having se–” Ilona Maher, the uploader of the video, jokingly says before cutting the video off.
The beds were designed by Japanese company Airweave to honor Tokyo 2020’s sustainability initiative. As flimsy as cardboard seems, they’re built for resilience so as to be reused or donated after the games.
The beds are also built for comfort and support, with three segments to target the upper body, waist, and legs. On top of that, they’re custom-fit to the bodies and preferences of Olympians, down to resistance and firmness levels.
According to the Associated Press, each bed can hold up to 440 pounds of weight. So, “anti-sex”? Take it as you will.
