When the design of headphones began to move away from wired, and Bluetooth buds began to take over, there was a noticeable gap: no more being able to hold the inline microphone closer to your mouth when taking a call, so that one person sat nearby you isn’t hearing all the details. LG’s newest additions to the Tone Free wireless earbuds lineup might just have the solution.
This solution is called ‘Whispering Mode’. When this is activated, users can remove the right earbud and hold it closer to the mouth, turning the hardware into a dedicated microphone rather than pausing or ending the call when it has been taken off.
There are two wins to this. Users can now talk more quietly while still being heard clearly on the other side; and they can also be heard better even if they’re in a chaotic, noisy place.
In addition, each earbud has three microphones to itself. With those six, it can almost be guaranteed that the earbuds offer a much better calling experience, enhancing primary voices and removing disruptive background noise. This is, as we’ve learnt this last year-and-a-half, crucial when it comes to remote working and overall communications.
The Headphone Spatial Processing technology from Meridian Audio is described to “envelop the listener with sound that seems to originate from all directions,” writes the press release. With noise-canceling in-ear fit and a hygienic UV nano charging case, it’s ideal for users with “active, high-energy lifestyles.”
The new lineup features three models: the FP5, FP8, and FP9. The FP9 has an exclusive feature that sets it apart from the other two, which is a wireless transmission function. Using a USB-C-to-AUX cable, users can plug the case into non-Bluetooth devices, which allows them to connect and use the earbuds wirelessly. For devices like the Nintendo Switch, that could definitely come in handy.
Pricing hasn’t been announced widely yet, but the innovative new Tone Free additions are expected to be widely rolled out starting from this month.
