Nike is no stranger to sport-star collaborations – from the late Kobe Bryant to Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan, some of the biggest names to ever grace the sporting world have worked with the Swoosh.
However, one of the current athletes it’s partnering has lashed out at his the latest release of own collaboration, going as far as to say the designs are “trash.”
Kyrie Irving, a seven-time NBA all-star playing for the Brooklyn Nets, had first signed a deal with Nike back in 2011. His own line of Nike sneakers began in 2014, making the latest release one of many versions the pair have collaborated on.
“I have nothing to do with the design or marketing of the upcoming Kyrie 8. These are trash! I have absolutely nothing to do with them! Nike plans to release it without my okay, regardless of what I say, so I apologize in advance,” Irving wrote in the comments of an Instagram post.
According to Bloomberg, leaked pictures of the upcoming shoes were released earlier in the week, appearing to be a pair of black and silver shoes donning Nike’s iconic swoosh. This is one of the most high-profile call-outs Nike’s had to face in recent times, and while the news makes waves online, no one from the brand has commented on it just yet.
Take a look at the leaked design below.
