Following its unveiling in 2019, Tesla has said the Cybertruck would start manufacturing from late 2021. However, after remarks from company executives during the firm’s second-quarter earnings call, it’s all but confirmed that the truck won’t be launching this year.

Lars Moravy, vice president of vehicle engineering at Tesla, tried to conceal any news of the delay, but his statement still essentially confirmed that its timeline would be pushed back.

“Cybertruck is at a stage where we finished basic engineering of the architecture of the vehicle. With the Cybertruck, we are redefining how a vehicle is being made. As Elon said, it carries much of the structural pack and large casting design of the Model Y being built in Berlin and Austin,” Moravy explained, as per CNET.

Moravy also confirmed that Tesla would be focusing on Model Y first, saying: “We are moving into the beta phases of Cybertruck later this year and we will be looking to ramp up production at Giga Texas after Model Y is up and running.”

Additionally, documents from the meeting showed that the Cybertruck was grouped together with the also-delayed Semi, Roadster, and a “future product” under the heading “in development.” This differs from the Model Y, which has been listed as “under construction.”

Chances are, the Cybertrucks will only start hitting the roads late 2022 or in 2023.
