The commercial district of Polígono de Son Malferit in Spain’s Balearic Islands is known by locals as “where IKEA is.” So to announce its arrival in the area, KFC Spain has given its logo a familiar makeover to make passersby do a double-take.
Riding on the coattails, or carpet tassels, of the furniture giant, KFC has put up a billboard portraying its branding in the same colors, typography, and style as the iconic IKEA lettermark to tease the opening of its fourth location in Majorca, Ad Age notes. The amusing makeover was helmed by Madrid creative agency PS21.
Beatriz Martinez, brand manager at KFC Spain, details, “The opening of this new restaurant is an opportunity to get closer to the inhabitants of this region.”
Some brands would predictably be ticked off about having their logos appropriated, but IKEA is welcoming its new neighbor with open arms. On social media, it cheekily responds in Spanish: “Thank you KFC for telling people where the #ChickenChicken [KFC Spain’s hashtag] is: on our HUVUDROLL meatballs.”
Everyone loves some finger lickin’ good banter, and it’s certainly a welcome change from the baffling chicken wars between fast-food chains.
Gracias, @KFC_ES, por indicar a la gente dónde está el #PolloPollo: en nuestras albóndigas HUVUDROLL.😉 pic.twitter.com/9wIisE5Vcn
