Xiaomi Unveils The ‘CyberDog’: AI Lifelong Companion, No Potty-Training Required

Man’s best friend just might be fully automated too, adding to the growing list of things that aim to be computerized in time to come. We have Xiaomi’s newest announcement, the ‘CyberDog’, joining the team.
On Tuesday, Xiaomi revealed its newest invention: a “bio-inspired quadruped robot.” It’s an open-source “companion” that developers can build upon themselves. CyberDog’s brain is made up of the NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX platform, an AI Supercomputer that boasts two deep learning acceleration engines.
While Boston Dynamics’ famous robot dog Spot is designed to carry out industrial tasks, the CyberDog seems to be made for the home.
It’s kitted out with the company’s own motors, allowing for speed up to 3.2m/s (7mph) and agility even in complex motions, like backflips. 11 sensors provide instant, real-time feedback, allowing it to interact with its environment to the fullest capabilities.

When interacting with its owners, the CyberDog does have the advantage of being built by a company like Xiaomi: it utilizes the imaging tech in smartphone cameras to train its computer vision algorithm. Just like a regular dog, it’ll grow to recognize its owners’ faces and follow them around, with face recognition.
And it has a built-in GPS, too: the sensors allow it to analyze its environment while on the move, mapping routes and avoiding obstacles along the way.
It’s not for sale—yet, at least. Xiaomi is just releasing 1,000 CyberDogs at RMB¥9,999 (US$1,541)—much lower than Spot’s US$74,500 price—to fans, engineers, and robotics enthusiasts to “jointly explore the immense possibility of CyberDog.”
Alongside this, the company will also set up the Xiaomi Open Source Community, a platform used to share progress and results with developers, building upon its open-source algorithm.
Well, at least you won’t have to potty-train it.
