The American Express (AMEX) Centurion Black Card is among the most exclusive in the world, and now it’s getting a new look, or three.
In collaboration with architect Rem Koolhaas and artist Kehinde Wiley, AMEX is unveiling two new Art Card designs, as well as a Prada wearable for seamless, convenient payment. The original black card will still be available, too.
The black card retains its classic design, only now more inspired by “less is more,” likening its aspiration to aerodynamics. AMEX endeavors to marry innovation with modernity with the new sleek redesign, and the collaborative Art Cards add a colorful touch.
Koolhaas and AMEX chose to feature Boompjes, a project he had embarked on in the early 1980s. The drawing was first created as part of a commission to redevelop a central district in Rotterdam after German bombings during the Second World War. Although left unfinished at first, the project now finds a new happy ending, having been immortalized on the Centurion.
In Wiley’s design, the botanical motif is inspired by the artist’s Princess Victoire of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha work from his famous An Economy of Grace series, dedicated to celebrating African-American women.
Lastly, the Prada wearable incorporates a tiny microchip housed in a Saffiano leather band, and works in the same way as a contactless card or mobile payments. AMEX has ensured it doesn’t require batteries, chargers, or cables. “Because,” the brand explains, “simple can also be luxurious.”

These will be launched alongside a new feature for the card’s highly exclusive members: Centurion Living, a series of programs focused on arts and culture. ‘Great Performances & Experiences’ aims to allow members to indulge in their current interests, while ‘Introductions’ will introduce them to new affinities.
