Peloton Unveils ‘Safer’ Treadmill At Lower Cost Following Nationwide Recall

Back in May this year, Peloton issued a nationwide voluntary recall of its treadmills. This was due to a warning by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), following the death of a six-year-old child and other serious injuries that occurred due to the Tread and Tread+’s poor safety features.
Now, the company is planning to reintroduce newer, and safer, treadmills to customers. From August 30, the updated Tread will be available in the US, Canada, and the UK for US$2,495, as per Engadget.
The new Tread comes with many of the same features the Tread+ had, though it’s now more affordable. Major changes to the treadmill include a 23.8-inch HD touchscreen instead of a 32-inch screen, and a traditional running belt in place of a shock-absorbing slat belt. It’s also slightly smaller than the previous model at 68 by 33 inches.
In response to the safety issues, the new Tread will have built-in safety features. First, the ‘Tread Lock’ is a four-digital digital passcode mandatory for all machines. Unlike its previous subscription-only plan, the Tread Lock will now be available for both All-Access members and non-members. The firm has also included a physical safety key that runners can pull to come to a quick stop.
Will customers be willing to give Peloton another go after its nationwide recall? Maybe the lower price point and safety features will be enough of a draw to tempt those who are looking to exercise at home.
