After being signed by United Talent Agency (UTA), CryptoPunks are about to hit even bigger screens than ever before.
The Punks’ developer, Larva Labs, has recently closed a deal with the agency to represent the explosive NFT art project. Other crypto-based projects by the same team, such as Meebits and Autoglyphs, will also be part of the partnership.
Launched in 2017, CryptoPunks are regarded as one of the earliest NFT art projects, which we’ve seen blow up in popularity over this year so far. The Punks’ pixelated art style and algorithmically-generated aesthetics are instantly recognizable now, arguably synonymous to the name. Even Visa owns one.
Under UTA, these valuable avatars will find themselves in more traditional forms of media such as film, television, video games, publishing, and other forms of licensing.
This is one of the first opportunities “for an IP that fully originated in crypto-world to enter a broader entertainment space,” Lesley Silverman, head of UTA Digital Assets, tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that it had “earned it” after it “hit the zeitgeist in a tremendous way.”
“Tremendous” is a fitting way to describe the success of the project, which has seen transactions in their millions becoming the norm for the highly sought-after unique artworks.
Matt Hall, co-founder of Larva Labs, adds that the team is “excited” about the deal, which was “for the benefit of the entire community connected to our projects.” He states that this exposure will help to protect the art’s “growth and value for the long term.”
Larva Labs’ Meebits and Autoglyphs were created a few years after this initial blockchain project. So while they haven’t hit the popularity the Punks have, it’s too early to say that they never will.
