Amazon could launch its own television sets by October, according to a new report by Business Insider. The displays are expected to span from 55 to 75 inches in width, and will include the company’s virtual assistant, Alexa.
As per the report, the self-branded television project has been under wraps for nearly two years, and is part of Amazon’s Devices and Lab126 divisions.
Interestingly, the company will not be manufacturing the units itself. Amazon will engage third-party companies to produce the televisions, such as TCL. There’s also another television setup already in the works behind the scenes.
According to CNET, AmazonBasics TVs are already on sale in India, and were launched at the tail end of last year. A release in the US could be a big move for the company, as it plans to integrate its Alexa-powered devices into an ecosystem that could rival Apple’s.
This move makes sense for the retail giant, which already offers popular television streaming service Amazon Prime Video.
Now, it’ll be able to offer the entire package of the television setup and the subscription service. Plus, with it already selling other brands’ televisions through the Amazon website, it’s perhaps a no-brainer to cash in and sell some of its own.
