It has been said by the UK’s Minister of Transport, Rachel Maclean, that new legislation will require all new buildings in England—including homes—to have chargers for electric vehicles (EVs).
This was originally announced in 2019, and the government has reportedly been working towards incorporating it since then. It’s in line with the UK’s goal of ceasing the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2030, brought forward from 2040.
The pending law, announced on Thursday’s transport questions in the House of Commons, states that all homes and offices will need to include a “smart” charging device capable of automatically charging vehicles during off-peak periods.
Specifically, new office blocks will be required to install one charge point for every five parking spaces, Electrek notes.
Perhaps this could alleviate the anxieties that some drivers face regarding the change from conventional to electric vehicles, especially when it comes to parking.
Maclean also states that the UK government “intend[s] to lay legislation later this year.”
In encouraging the switch to EVs, the government has also rolled out a new app, EV8 Switch, where users can calculate how much money they could save by switching from their current petrol or diesel vehicle to an EV.
It’ll also provide details on how much carbon dioxide could be saved, as well as ways to improve to air quality.
Additionally, it has been stated that the current fund to install EV chargers across the country has been extended from its initial amount of £50 million (US$69,212,000). There are also multiple grant schemes in place.
“We have already committed £1.3 billion to accelerate the rollout of charging infrastructure up and down the country,” states Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.
“And as we look forward to COP26 and beyond, our vision is that the UK is at the forefront of the zero emission transport future, creating thousands of green jobs in the process.”
Thank you @FelicityBuchan for all the hard work you've done on your 10 Minute Rule Bill which calls for new homes & workplaces to be required to have EV charging points installed 🔋⚡️
