Life used to be extremely cruel centuries ago, with punishment methods involving burning and dismemberment—and these were oftentimes public spectacles.
That’s not to say things are peachy these days. Drawing parallels between plague-infested times and now, Italian human rights nonprofit Fare x Bene Onlus likens torture tactics from the medieval times and the Inquisition to brutal messages and acts that violate an individual’s personal boundaries in a campaign entitled CyberTorture.
“Cyberbullying,” advertising agency Leo Burnett Italy details, “[is] modern torture, with one out of three adolescents in Italy as victims.”
Cyberbullying ploys include online defamation, unsolicited sexual advancements, and impersonation. Attacks have worsened since the pandemic, with much of the world shifting online.
The drastic comparisons compel the viewer to insert themselves into the sort of torment that goes through a victim’s mind when they’re bullied online. The helplessness and shame they feel as others watch the “cyber torture” take place can be a truly isolating experience.
