Last week, Blue Origin revealed it would be setting off on its second spaceflight come October 12, and unveiled two of its new crewmembers. Despite Jeff Bezos’ space venture being implicated in some bad PR, it has managed to cause an excited stir within the community with its latest crew member.
Turns out, the third member of the crew will be Star Trek legend William Shatner, who played the role of James T. Kirk on the famed television series. Captain Kirk will finally be venturing into space in real life, and will become the oldest person to date to do so, as per Mashable.
The 90-year-old will join Dr Chris Boshuizen, a former Space Mission Architect, and Glen de Vries, vice-chairman of a pioneering research firm. The previous record-holder, Wally Funk, had flown on Blue Origin’s first flight together with Bezos.
Alongside Shatner will be the last crew member, Audrey Powers, Blue Origin’s very own Vice-President of Mission & Flight Operations. The quartet will take to space in the company’s New Shepard rocket, which will lift off from Launch Site One.
“I’ve heard about space for a long time now. I’m taking the opportunity to see it for myself. What a miracle,” said Shatner.
