Google Is Working To Make Traffic Lights More Efficient With AI Controls

In a blog post published on Wednesday, Google announced that it would be taking further steps to create a more sustainable future, outlining some of its features that would allow users to use the company’s products to make better, more eco-friendly choices.
One of these things is suggesting that artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to create more efficient traffic lights.
The software is being piloted in Israel, where AI is used to predict traffic conditions and consequential congestion. As a result, the timing of traffic lights can be adjusted accordingly.
While reducing the time spent waiting in the car at a busy intersection after work when, really, all you want to do is get back home and crash on the couch, it also reduces the amount of fuel the vehicle is using while idling at the red light.
Although still in early research stages, the technology is said to have the potential to reduce fuel usage and traffic delays by up to 20% via optimization of signal lights. There are plans in place to expand the testing of this new innovation to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Rio de Janeiro’s municipal traffic authority has told Reuters that it has high hopes for this AI-powered system, as it has proven successful when tested previously in Israel. Within the next few months, locations should be chosen and announced, and the system will be implemented.
Other areas the tech giant is working on in its latest climate pledge include reducing emissions in its offices; an introduction into Google Maps to allow users to choose the most fuel-efficient route for their journey; and displaying carbon emissions information for travel bookings.
