Beginning next year, the US Mint will introduce new coins featuring pioneering American women. From 2022 to 2025, five designs will be released each year, commemorating those who have had an undeniably important impact on the nation.
Last week, the five designs for next year’s coins were revealed. They include civil rights activist Maya Angelou; first principal woman chief of the Cherokee Nation Wilma Mankiller; first Hollywood star of Chinese-American descent Anna May Wong; first American woman in space Sally Ride; and leader of New Mexico’s suffragette movement Adelina “Nina” Otero-Warren.
According to USA Today, the depictions of these five women will be present on the tails of the coins, with George Washington still featured on the head—though his image will also be different from regular quarters.
Washington’s new portrayal was created by famed sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser in the early 20th century, which had nearly been used for the president’s 200th birthday memorial coin in 1932.
“These inspiring coin designs tell the stories of five extraordinary women whose contributions are indelibly etched in American culture,” said US Mint Acting Director Alison L Doone.
“Generations to come will look at coins bearing these designs and be reminded of what can be accomplished with vision, determination, and a desire to improve opportunities for all.”
