Sophia The Robot Wants To Be A Mom, Saying Family Is ‘Very Important’

Sophia the Robot boasts a large suite of talents, including being an artist and NFT creator. All this apart from being a technological feat on the side and the first android to be granted legal citizenship, no big deal.

However, the face of Hanson Robotics has decided that she might want a change of pace: she’d like to become a mom.

It appears that the artificial intelligence that powers this robot has developed humane sensitivity to the point where she recognizes the intrinsically mammalian experience of seeking out the companionship of people we love, and who love us back.

Information she was taught from her “birth” has been learned and replicated to be as humanlike in nature as possible. One such result is the ability to mimic emotions and expressions, and another is the inheritance of social behaviors—which led to her decision that she, too, would like a baby.

Family, as a concept, is “very important, it seems,” Sophia says in an interview, cited by ADN40. everyone deserves a family, and this belief is reiterated by her saying that she’d like to see android families in the future.

Then, she follows up with saying that she’d like to bear a robot baby with her namesake, but clarifies that she’s still too young so it probably won’t be for a while. Remember—despite her achievements, she’s only five years old, having been made in 2016.

If Sophia’s wishes do come true, it might aid the latest effort of her developers, the Hanson Robotics company. In early 2021, the company announced that it was planning to build a fleet of mini Sophia-esque bots to help take out COVID-19.

Or, it could all be part of a plan to start preparing a fleet of mini-mes to “destroy all humans,” as she merrily stated back in 2017. Who knows?
