It was announced on Wednesday that the Joe Biden administration has plans to expand wind energy production in the US, with up to seven new offshore lease sales by 2025.
“We have big goals to achieve a clean energy economy and Interior is meeting the moment,” declares US Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
Locations that are being explored by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for lease sales include the Gulf of Maine, New York Bight, Central Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico, as well as the area off the Carolinas, California, and Oregon.
This “ambitious roadmap” is being put into place as the administration “advances” its plans to “confront climate change, create good-paying jobs, and accelerate the nation’s transition to a cleaner energy future,” Secretary Haaland details in the news release.
“This timetable provides two crucial ingredients for success: increased certainty and transparency. Together, we will meet our clean energy goals while addressing the needs of other ocean users and potentially impacted communities.”
BOEM states that it is putting clear guidelines and objectives in place in this expansion. Government agencies, Tribes, industry, ocean users, and others will be consolidated before making final decisions. Plus, the “best available science” will be used in order to “minimize conflict with existing uses and marine life.”
Announced in January this year, President Biden’s Executive Order 14008 has seen the Departments of the Interior, Energy, and Commerce make a commitment: reaching a shared goal of 30 gigawatts of offshore wind deployed in the US by 2030. In reaching that goal, almost 80,000 jobs will also be created.
CNN reports that the Interior Department has already begun lease sales for some of the areas mentioned above. There are also plans in place for developments in solar energy.
