French startup MoonBikes has announced that its electric bike—designed specifically for riding in the snow—will hit the powder just in time for winter. The first 250 snow bikes will reach customers in December, with a second shipment expected sometime in early 2022.
Distinct from regular electric bicycles, the MoonBike is a mashup of the agility of a classic two-wheeler and the power of a motorcycle. Also, it’s built to integrate with nature—the device emits no sound while traveling, allowing riders to enjoy serene landscapes without disturbing the surroundings.

Riders won’t need tons of experience before they hop on, either. Not only is it three times lighter than a snowmobile, but the MoonBike also comes with a low center of gravity, making it easy to find balance even at its top speed of 26 mph. Plus, measuring just 28 inches wide, it’s easy to store and transport to snowy escapades.
“After three years of research and development, and rigorous testing across the French Alps, we are proud to launch a brand-new category of vehicles, led by an innovative patented propulsion system,” said founder Nicolas Muron.
“Snow lovers now have a sustainable and silent alternative without compromising speed, price, or autonomy, as MoonBikes can run up to three hours with a second battery or 1.5 hours with one.”

According to Robb Report, each bike comes with one battery and charger, though riders can opt for add-on packages that come with additional battery packs.
Fancy a MoonBike of your own? Preorders are now open, with each snow bike going for US$8,500 a pop. It’s available in white or red colorways, with only 250 units up for grabs in 2022.
