Following a flurry of activity at Facebook last week, new rumors have emerged that the social media platform could be looking to change its name as early as in a few days.
The Verge first broke that its new name could be related to Horizon, a virtual reality platform the company recently created. Others, such as the company’s former Civic Integrity Chief Samidh Chakrabarti, have speculated that the site could be renamed “Meta,” in reference to founder Mark Zuckerberg’s plans to expand into the next frontier of the internet.
According to Bloomberg, meta.com currently redirects to meta.org, a biomedical research company started by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, of which the Facebook CEO is a part of. This would allow Facebook to switch its domain to the snazzy, go-to name for any brand looking to dip its toe into the metaverse space.
It’s likely that Facebook’s other apps, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, will remain as they are, but under the renamed parent firm. An example of such an organization in the tech space would be Google, of which the search engine and its subsidiaries are governed by parent Alphabet Inc.
Social media is bound to remain rife with speculations throughout the next week, as the company is only expected to reveal its rebranding decision on October 28.
What do you think Facebook’s new name could possibly be? Sit tight; we’ll find out soon enough.
