“Bring the McRib back” is one plea you’ll always hear from McDonald’s fans. Well, the fast-food giant has listened, and it’s reviving the porky cult favorite in more ways than one.

In time for the McRib’s 40th anniversary, McDonald’s has cooked up a digital version it says is “almost as saucy” as the original. The McRib non-fungible tokens are the first NFTs to be unleashed by McDonald’s in the US, hot on the heels of a world-first round in China.

Where the virtual sandwich lacks in flavor, it makes up for in eternality. “With the McRib NFT, you’ll never again have to say goodbye to the sandwich you love,” describes McDonald’s in the press release. It’s not what the people wanted, but it’s probably what a few needed.

Another perk is that the NFT version is free, at least for a limited group of collectors. The McRib NFT will be given away at a sweepstakes in November. Fans would simply need to retweet an invitation sent out by the McDonald’s Twitter account between November 1 and November 7 via a public account to enter the sweepstakes, and McDonald’s will pick 10 new digital McRib owners by November 12.

Luckily, there will be enough real McRibs to go around for those who don’t fancy the metallic aftertaste of crypto—they just won’t be around all year. Starting November 1, McDonald’s will bring back the fan-favorite menu item for a limited time in participating restaurants nationwide.
