Emirates has announced it will be scrapping its first-ever Airbus A380, with parts of the airplane being recycled. Intriguingly, it will also be turning parts of the aircraft into furniture and collectibles to be sold to the public.
According to Simple Flying, the plane, which has been in use for over 6,000 flights, took its final trip back in March 2020, traveling from Singapore to Dubai. It was then sent to the Emirates Engineering Center at the Dubai World Central Airport, where components such as engines, landing gear, and the cockpit, were reclaimed to be reused.
If you’re an aviation geek, you could stand a chance to snag some of the aircraft’s most valuable offerings, such as its luxurious bar. Wings Craft, a UAE-based firm, will be salvaging components from the cabin to upcycle them into one-of-a-kind furniture, memorabilia, and collectibles.
While details of the sale has yet to been announced, Insider reported that proceeds from the goods will go towards the company’s nonprofit organization to help children in need.
“Approximately 190 tonnes of various metals, plastics, carbon fiber composites, and other materials will be removed from the aircraft and passed on for recycling or repurposing via our upcycling program with Wings Craft,” said Falcon Aircraft Recycling Director, Andrew Tonks.
“Through this initiative, our customers and fans can take home a piece of aviation history while saving valuable materials from landfill, and contributing to a charitable cause through the Emirates Airline Foundation,” remarked Emirates president Sir Tim Clark. “It’s an elegant solution and fitting retirement solution for this iconic aircraft and our flagship.”
