Patreon already has a pretty solid reputation in the creator community, with a decent repertoire of text and image sharing options. It’s now poised to introduce its own tools for creators on the platform, and one area that it’s keen to expand upon is its approach to video.
Currently, creators who want to share video with their supporters either have to keep it to 200MB and below to upload onto the site, or use an external platform like YouTube or Vimeo and link to it in their posts.
While this could work for short clips or exclusive peeks into trailers and such, it isn’t ideal for creators whose main practice includes video content, such as animators.
Patreon’s new feature aims to remove the need to rely on an external platform entirely, and it can be presumed that the 200MB limit will be lifted too. It has been stated that besides a video hosting platform, the company is also working on its own player. Supporters can watch and interact straight from the creator’s page without needing to use any other service.
As of now, Patreon hasn’t revealed any other details on the new product, including when it will be rolled out. However, when it does eventually come, users will be able to keep more of their content on Patreon without needing the hassle of dealing with other platforms and integrating them.
This comes at a time where other social media and content creation platforms, such as Instagram, are moving towards video as an up-and-coming new way of distributing content and sharing information.
