SpaceX Unveils Extravehicular Activity Suit For Astronauts To Go On Spacewalks

On May the 4th, aptly Star Wars Day, Elon Musk’s SpaceX presented what it called its Extravehicular Activity (EVA) suit, designed specifically for spacewalks. This futuristic garment builds upon the existing technology used in Crew Dragon’s Intravehicular Activity (IVA) suit but offers crucial advancements for astronauts venturing outside the spacecraft.
The EVA suit prioritizes astronaut mobility during pressurized conditions. This is achieved through innovative joint designs that utilize new materials and fabrication processes. These joints remain flexible when unpressurized, allowing for a wider range of motion during a spacewalk, yet stiffen and provide support when inflated.

Another key feature is the advanced helmet. It incorporates a specially designed visor that reduces glare from the sun, a critical factor for astronaut visibility during spacewalks. Additionally, the helmet boasts a Heads-Up Display (HUD) that relays crucial information on suit vitals such as pressure, temperature, and relative humidity.
The suit also features a revamped thermal management system, utilizing advanced textiles to regulate astronaut temperature during spacewalks, a critical consideration in the harsh environment of space where astronauts can experience extreme temperature fluctuations.
The new EVA suit is slated for its maiden voyage on the upcoming Polaris Dawn mission, the first of three human spaceflight missions planned by SpaceX. This private spaceflight, part of the Polaris program backed by billionaire Jared Isaacman, will see four astronauts venture into orbit, with one or more crew members undertaking the first-ever commercial spacewalk using the new suit.
