While most of us are used to listening to music on shuffle, many artists and producers seem to feel strongly that albums should be appreciated chronologically.
In fact, it was so important to Adele that her new album, 30, be heard in the right order, that she asked Spotify to remove shuffle as the default play mode on its platform.
“This was the only request I had in our ever-changing industry! We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended,” Adele tweeted.
The music service complied, removing the shuffle option from all of the artist’s albums. And it didn’t just stop there. According to Gizmodo, the option has disappeared from other artists’ works as well, with albums now set to play in order by default.
Spotify told Variety it was excited to release this “new premium feature,” which might seem more like an anti-feature, that has been long requested by artists. If users wish to play an album on shuffle, they’ll have to activate the option from the player screen of an individual song.
“For those users still wishing to shuffle an album, they can go to the Now Playing View and select the ‘shuffle’ toggle. As always, we will continue to iterate our products and features to create the best experiences for both artists and their fans,” said the platform.
Anything for you 🙏✨
