When an Ontario grandmother brought an “educational toy” home from Walmart, she was shocked to find the cactus plushie swearing and singing songs about coke—no, not the drink, but the drug.
“This toy uses swear words and talks about cocaine use. This is not what I ordered from my granddaughter,” Ania Tanner told CTV News Toronto.
According to the site, the toy was sold as an “educational” companion for children, and sang in English, Spanish, and Polish. It was selling for about US$26.
When Tanner listened to the Polish rendition of the song, she quickly realized the cutesy cactus was singing about cocaine, drug abuse, suicide, depression, and used swear words.
“It just so happens that I am Polish and when I started to listen to the songs and I heard the words I was in shock. I thought ‘what, is this some kind of joke?’” said Tanner.
Turns out, the song used was a track by Polish rapper Cypis, who was unaware that the Chinese manufacturer had used his voice for the toy. He is planning to take action against the company for using his tune without a license.
“It’s about taking five grams of cocaine and being alone… It’s a very depressing song,” Tanner remarked.
Toronto CTV News cited that the toy had also been sold in Europe via Amazon, and had complaints regarding its inappropriate song lyrics. Walmart said it was removing the item from its shelves till it finishes an ongoing investigation into the matter.
“These items are sold by a third-party seller on our marketplace website. We are removing the items while we look into this complaint further,” said a brand spokesperson.
Perhaps in a few households around the world, toddlers are dancing along to a song in Polish not knowing it’s about drugs and depression.
