Burger King has given McDonald’s a huge 50th-birthday surprise, but somehow, it’s not the Golden Arches who has the last laugh.
By now, you’ve likely noticed the tongue-in-cheek rivalry between both fast-food giants. With the help of creative agency INGO Hamburg, Burger King is once again embracing this twisted codependency to celebrate 50 years of McDonald’s presence in Germany. A series of billboards in Munich depict the two as kings and court jesters in medieval artwork, with the tagline: “Every King Needs a Clown.”
The Middle-Age characters obviously represent the brands’ own mascots. Also, yes, McDonald’s Germany is “ancient,” even if it opened just five years earlier than Burger King did in the country.
To send its message across, Burger King had one truck drive past McDonald’s first restaurant in Germany, carrying one of the images.
15 other out-of-home prints were displayed in Munich, and for added embarrassment, the campaign was shared on Burger King’s social media accounts too.

Klaus Schmäing, Marketing Director at Burger King Germany, says the teasing is all done out of love. After all, the two have weathered tough times together, including the recent lockdown.
“Just as every king used to have a court jester, the King wouldn’t be the same without the clown,” he details in an email to DesignTAXI. “McDonald's revolutionized gastronomy in Germany 50 years ago and thus laid the path for [everyone]… We wish McDonald’s Germany all the best for its 50th birthday!”
Tobias Ahrens, INGO Hamburg’s Managing Director and Chief Creative Officer, adds: “You turn 50 only once, after all, and that’s why we’re delighted that Burger King, with our support, didn’t miss the opportunity to congratulate McDonald’s in this way. We hope our competitor is happy, at least a little bit.”
