Instead of dressing its storefronts for the holidays, Louis Vuitton took this time to pay homage to menswear artistic director
Virgil Abloh, who died of cancer on November 28, by converting boutique windows all over the world in his memory.
Bearing the aesthetics of the
final Louis Vuitton show planned by Abloh, store windows have been splashed in smudged watercolor landscapes (called “Virgil’s Sky”) meant to evoke a childlike wonder à la the imaginative spirit of
The Wizard of Oz. The tagline, “Virgil Was Here”, with Abloh’s iconic double quote marks, is written on each window.
The displays can be seen outside locations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Sydney, Bangkok, Milan, Madrid, and Istanbul. What’s mentionable is that the poignant tribute isn’t being publicized on any of Louis Vuitton’s online channels, and
WWD was the first to report of the sightings. Shoppers around the globe have also shared photos of the colorful window displays on social media.
The physical homage appeared in time for a private funeral held in Chicago, Abloh’s hometown, on December 3.
